PPGBA research makes unprecedented report on the American continent

Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide health problem. Doctoral project developed at PPGBA, detected for the first time, in Brazil and the American continent, the mecC gene responsible for resistance to one of the most used classes of antimicrobials in the world, betalactams. The research was developed by student José Givanildo da Silva, with guidance from Prof. Dr. Rinaldo Aparecido Mota in partnership with Prof. Dr. Celso Oliveira, from the Federal University of Paraíba. The microorganism carrying the gene in question was isolated from samples of milk, human beings and milking utensils on dairy farms in the state of Pernambuco. The report and description of the finding was recently published in the journal Transboundary and Emerging Diseases, considered the fourth best journal in the field of veterinary science in the world.
